Deriving Mesoscale Surface Current Fields from Multi-Sensor Satellite Data
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sequential multi-sensor satellite images from Envisat ASAR and WiFS are used for the computation of mesoscale surface currents in the southestern Baltic Sea (Southern Baltic Proper). Marine surface films of different origin and accumulated algae at the water surface are imaged by the sensors working in the optical, infrared, and microwave part of the electromagnetic spectrum and can thus be used as tracers for the local motion of the sea surface. Taking advantage of the sufficiently short time lags between the multiple image acquisitions (from less than one hour to one day) and of the high spatial coverage we calculated surface motion fields by enhancing and combining image-processing techniques. Our computed two-dimensional surface current fields are compared with, and they complement, existing data from numerical models.

From Multi-Sensor Tracking of Sea Surface Films to Mesoscale and Sub-Mesoscale Sea Surface Current Fields
The knowledge about mesoscale and sub-mesoscale sea surface current fields is of high interdisciplinary interest, since it results in a better understanding of ocean-atmosphere interactions. However, many available numerical model results are of resolutions, which are too coarse to investigate mesoscale and sub-mesoscale turbulent features like eddies, particularly in coastal waters. In this wo...
متن کاملMesoscale Variabilities in Sea Surface Current Fields Derived through Multi-sensor Tracking of Sea Surface Films
In recent studies [1], we have already shown that it is possible to derive mesoscale sea surface current fields by tracking signatures of marine surface films in multisensor satellite data. Although the derived sea surface current fields corresponded well with those provided by numerical models, the former mainly showed largescale current properties. This is insofar remarkable, as the traced si...

Satellite techniques for measurement of sea surface temperature (SST) are reviewed briefly, and a discussion of satellite SST applications and recent research in oceanography is provided. These applications include the areas of climate, mesoscale oceanography, and fisheries. Examples given focus mainly on the Pacific and California Current regions. Satellite SST data are currently used operatio...
متن کاملMesoscale Sea Surface Currents Derived from Multi-sensor Satellite Imagery
The aim of the study presented herein is to use multisensor / multi-channel satellite images to compute meso-scale surface currents in the Northern and Central Baltic Proper. The images were acquired by the Thematic Mapper (TM) aboard Landsat, the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) aboard ERS-2, the Wide-Field Scanner (WiFS) aboard the IRS satellites, and the Seaviewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor (S...
متن کاملDeriving Ocean Surface Drift Using Multiple SAR Sensors
Tracking and monitoring ocean features which have short coherent time periods from sequential satellite images requires that the images have both very high spatial resolutions and short temporal sampling intervals (i.e., repeated cycles). Satellite images from a single sensor in a polar-orbiting satellite usually cannot meet these requirements since high spatial resolution of the sensor may res...
